“Most of you know the story of Saint Katharine Drexel, one of the great saints raised up by this local Church. When she spoke to Pope Leo XIII of the needs of the missions, the Pope – he was a very wise Pope! – asked her pointedly: 'What about you? What are you going to do?'. Those words changed Katharine’s life, because they reminded her that, in the end, every Christian man and woman, by virtue of baptism, has received a mission. Each one of us has to respond, as best we can, to the Lord’s call to build up his Body, the Church.”

SERVICE: Taking Care of His Suffering Body

Go into the whole world”, the Risen Christ still commands us today (Mk 16:15). Relying on his companionship, St. Ambrose teen parishioners can offer their witness of an authentic and fully human life of love to those in need in other places of the United States and the world.

The Arlington Diocesan High School WorkCamp is an intentional Christian community that provides an experience of direct service for young people within the boundaries of our diocese.  It involves months of preparation that culminates with a week long service project, sponsored by the Office of Youth Ministry, repairing and renovating homes of people who are mentally, physically or financially challenged.  Jesus says that the heart of the Christian faith is found in the two great commandments: Loving God and Loving others.  Loving God and loving others is what WorkCamp is all about.

Service Days!

Starting this summer, the Junior High and Senior High youth groups have begun giving their time to service. Carrying on the good works of Workcamp to their own neighborhood, they have helped clear out branches and debri to make room for the new preschool playground area at St. Ambrose Catholic School. Thank you for all that you give for God's glory!!!

Come join us the next time!

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'...and the King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'"         ~Matthew 25:34-36, 40

Adult Volunteers for Workcamp:

Handy-people are needed to volunteer for the week.

As a volunteer handyperson/contractor, your role has many facets:

You will be working with an adult leader and a crew to complete your work project as scheduled.  As the skilled member of the team, you will be responsible for teaching your crew how to do the repairs correctly.  It is the crew’s job to actually do the work under your guidance.  Your projects will be selected based on your expertise as well as safety and time constraint considerations.  It is important that you and the adult leader work together to ensure that he youth follow all safety rules listed on the project outline.  We ask that you set the example in being overly cautious.

You may be asked to purchase (a WorkCamp expense) needed materials to complete the project.  Save your receipts for reimbursement, mark them with the project’s name ,and turn them in to the Project’s Office at Homebase.

Depending on the type of trash generated on your work site, and if you feel your vehicle can handle the load, trash pickup and disposal may be another area that you could be of assistance.

Small gestures of love, of tenderness, of care, make people feel that the Lord is with us. This is how the door of mercy opens.

Prayer for missionaries

O almighty God, Lord of the harvest of souls, we ask you to guide and bless all who have gone forth to preach the Gospel. Endow them with the gifts of generosity and concern. Send your Holy Spirit on them, that he may strengthen them in weakness, comfort them in trials and direct their efforts...We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
